Students will explore the synergies between puppetry, object theatre and digital animation, as well as the key themes common to both traditional and modern practice.  Analysis and interrogation of the character of both live and mediated arenas is central to this degree, allowing students to explore international differences in the theory and approaches to both puppetry and digital animation. Interdisciplinary collaboration in the early stages of the MA is encouraged.

Resources and facilities
The MA is hosted by the School of Art and Design, giving students access to a range of excellent dedicated facilities within the School, ranging from traditional media through to industry-standard digital technology centres. Facilities are supervised by skilled technical personnel.

How do you study?
The course lectures and seminars are delivered by University tutors, invited designers, artists and other visiting professionals. Students will receive individual and group tutorials as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary working and regular peer-review presentations.

* Do you ever find that your puppet does or say things you never intended, do you find it/they sometimes have a life of their own? Examples would be great.
* I remember a humourous tv clip where Rod Hull’s puppet attacked Michael Parkinson.  Are there any other funny instances like this where the puppeteer appears to be a separate entity from the puppet??  There’s the film Dead of Night for example, where the dummy eventually takes over!

* I’ve found an internet site by Tova Ackerman regarding puppets/marionettes as metaphors for aspects of the puppetteer.  If anybody knows of books or articles along these lines, I’d love to hear about them.

Puppet Animation Scotland, in partnership with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, is pleased to announce this exciting opportunity for people with a strong interest in puppet theatre, and a desire to develop their own practical skills and knowledge.

This is an introduction to the wide range of necessary skills and techniques used by successful professionals in the creation of their work.

Students will collaborate with leading Scottish practitioners to present a performance of their own devising, having identified and developed themes and ideas, designed and built puppets, and rehearsed their animation and manipulation.

This course will also include a brief exploration of the rich history and heritage of puppet theatre, placing the work created during the two weeks within the context of the art form as well as the broader world of theatre and the arts.

Drawing on the vibrant history of this unique area of London, Left Luggage created a rich world incorporating theatrical installation, puppetry, masked performance and soundscape. This site-responsive piece transformed the converted Victorian chapel into an environment where the audience travelled through a love story between a ship’s figurehead carver and his creation; visited the mercurial Canton Kitty’s Limehouse opium den, the magical curios in the pawnbroker’s shop and the song-bird competition in an East End pub.
